What is a syllable?

Do you remember clapping out syllables in your early elementary years?

I do, in fact, that is all I remembered about them until 5 years ago when I started my Orton Gillingham journey.

On day one of my training my mind was 🤯. Syllables are SO MUCH more than a way to create a musical nightmare in a classroom.

First and foremost, a syllable is the section of a word built around a vowel sound. Without a vowel sound, you do not have a word. Therefore, syllables are critical in understanding how to segment larger words when reading and spelling.

But WAIT, this is where I seriously went WHAT...there are 6 types of syllables?!?

Not all students get taught or know these six types. If you are ready to help your child tackle reading and spelling then knowing these will make everyone's life EASIER!
